Tube amplifiers have long been praised by audiophiles for the smooth sound that also provides for years of absolute stress-free listening. On the other hand, older supporters of glass tube technology tend to omit one detail or another. Modern versions promise an accomplished mixture between soothing sound and all to demanding analytics. This can be seen most successfully, especially in the recent creations of Helmut Becker, which has set itself the challenge of eliminating all of the defects of the charming glass bulbs. Although the Baldur 70 is the Audio Valve’s new entry in the tube world, this caress lightly conceals remarkable live weight and even more respectable performance data. The “70” added to the name understates the output performance of this monoblock on 4 ohm. Each of these power generators delivers a very respectable 79 watts in lab tests. Therefore owners of the tube ensemble need not worry about optimal compatibility with demanding sound transformers. The Baldurs have enough control over the membranes. Even the other laboratory results show that the classical problems of this old technology, such as high intermodulation, can be avoided using modern approaches: seldom does a tube-based amplifier attain such good test results.

Maintenance-free, solid construction
Under the protective cover of each monoblock are four type 6AS7G output tubes, responsible for the width compatible output of the 70. These key data for these tubes display a pretty large spread but the Baldur automatically regulates the quiescent current. This guaranties constant parameters for overall circuit equalisation. The proud owner has the advantage that the permanent bias equalisation receives optimal sound quality. With manual adjustment, readjustment was always necessary due to the tubes ageing process. Moreover, the automatic function performs the task much more precisely than possible by hand so that the common mode of the output tubes in the Baldur 70 exhibit exemplary balance. Originally Helmut Becker arrived at this concept not for aesthetic reasons but because of the determination to meet the demands of constant product quality. In contrast to loose-wired superstructures, the customer gets what is practically a copy of the benchmark model, since Audio Valve compares every circuit board delivered with the master. The driver element of the “baby” consists of four double triodes, which in addition to signal amplification, also serve to form a complementary path to mirror-symmetrically trigger the output tubes.



Power and Control
These attributes are more usually associated with transistor bolides. However even here, the entry monos wipe away the prejudices. To the extent that the sound transformed connected actually deserve this designation and don’t simply turn the incoming currents into heat, then even those who love to listen to loud rock music will be happy with Audio Valve. At the same time the power generators do not even blink at the requirement for realistically reproducing the dimensions of a large orchestra. The wonderful “Gulan du” of Mari Boine reveals a base capacity compared to which some transistor candidates simply fade away. The Baldur 70 pump absolutely lean contoured impulses with the speed of an arrow in the direction of incredibly amazed listeners, using an enormous spectrum of sound colours while dressing bases with that soft stroke that one appreciates in good tubes. Naturally, the 70 passes in all of the key qualities for glass tubes. For example Mari Boine’s songs sound breathlessly authentic. Compliments—the small 70s are big enough in sound and could satisfy the desires of many dissatisfied music lovers.

Upshot
The Baldur 70 are right for everyone who wants to enjoy good tube sound without having to accept the disadvantages of some tube amplifiers. Their musical capabilities make the uncomplicated monos a real bargain.
